WHAT IS CATECHESIS?
“Catechesis is the act of handing on the Word of God intended to inform the faith community and candidates for initiation into the Church about the teachings of Christ, transmitted by the Apostles to the Church. Catechesis also involves the lifelong effort of forming people into witnesses to Christ and opening their hearts to the spiritual transformation given by the Holy Spirit” (http://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/how-we-teach/catechesis/index.cfm).
“Catechesis is nothing other than the process of transmitting the Gospel, as the Christian community has received it, understands it, celebrates it, lives it and communicates it in many ways” (General Directory for Catechesis, 105).
“In truth, there is present in catechesis the faith of all those who believe and allow themselves to be guided by the Holy Spirit” (General Directory for Catechesis, 105).
TASKS OF CATECHESIS
“Christ’s method of formation was accomplished by diverse yet interrelated tasks. His example is the most fruitful inspiration for effective catechesis today because it is integral to formation in the Christian faith. Catechesis must attend to each of these different dimensions of faith; each becomes a distinct yet complementary task. Faith must be known celebrated, lived, and expressed in prayer. So catechesis comprises six fundamental tasks, each of which is related to
an aspect of faith in Christ. All efforts in evangelization and catechesis should incorporate these tasks” (National Directory for Catechesis, 20):
1: Catechesis Promotes Knowledge of the Faith.
2: Catechesis Promotes Knowledge of the Meaning of Liturgy and the Sacraments.
3: Catechesis Promotes Moral Formation in Jesus Christ.
4: Catechesis Teaches the Christian How to Pray with Christ.
5: Catechesis Prepares the Christian to Live in Community and to Participate Actively in the Life and Mission of the Church.
6: Catechesis Promotes a Missionary Spirit that Prepares the Faithful to be Present as Christians in Society.
FAMILY CATECHESIS
“Parents are the first educators and most influential agents of catechesis for their children. Family catechesis takes place through words and especially through witness. Parents must be not only taught about the faith but invited to a full and active participation in the sacraments and life of the Church. Adult catechesis, designed especially for parents, also helps them nourish their own faith, as well as

THE PARISH AS AN ENVIRONMENT FOR CATECHESIS
“The parish is, without doubt, the most important locus (place) in which the Christian community is formed and expressed. This is called to be a fraternal and welcoming family where Christians become aware of being the people of God.) In the parish, all human differences melt away and are absorbed into the universality of the Church. The parish is also the usual place in which the faith is born and in which it grows. It constitutes, therefore, a very adequate community space for the realization of the ministry of the word at once as teaching, education and life experience” (General Directory for Catechesis, 257).
¿QUÈ ES LA CATEQUESIS?
“La catequesis es el acto de transmitir la Palabra de Dios con la intención de informar a la comunidad de fe y a los candidatos para la iniciación en la Iglesia acerca de las enseñanzas de Cristo, transmitidas por los Apóstoles a la Iglesia. “La catequesis no es otra cosa que el proceso de transmisión del Evangelio, ya que la comunidad Cristiana lo ha recibido, lo comprende, lo celebra, lo vive y lo comunica de muchas maneras” (Directorio General para la catequesis, 105).
“En verdad, en la catequesis está presente la fe de todos los que cree y se dejan guiar por el Espíritu Santo” (Directorio General para la catequesis, 105).
Tareas de la Catequesis
“El método de Formación de Cristo se realiza mediante tareas diversas pero interrelacionadas. Su ejemplo es la inspiración más fructíifera para una catequesis efectiva hoy porque es parte integral de la formación en la fe Cristiana. La catequesis debe atender a cada una de estas dimensiones diferentes de la fe; cada una se convierte en una tarea distinta pero complementaria. La fe debe ser conocida, celebrada, vivida y expresada en la oración. Así que la catequesis comprende seis tareas fundamentales, cada una de las cuales está relacionada con un aspecto de la fe en Cristo. Todos los esfuerzos en la evangelización y la catequesis deben incorporar estas tareas” (Directoria Nacional para la Catequesis, 20):
La catequesis promueve el conocimiento de la fe.
La catequesis promueve el conocimiento del significado de la Liturgia y los Sacramentos.
La catequesis promueve la formación moral en Jesucristo.
La catequesis enseña al Cristiano a orar con Cristo.
La catequesis prepara al Cristiano para vivir en comunidad y participar activamente en la vida y la misión de la Iglesia,
La catequesis promueve un espíritu misionero que prepara a los fieles para estar presente como cristianos en la Sociedad.
Catequesis familiar
“Los padres son los primeros educadores y los agentes más influyesntes de la catequesis para sus hijos. La catequesis familiar se realiza a través de las palabras y especialmente a través del testimonio. A los padres no sólo se les debe enseñar acerca de la fe, sino que se debe invitar a una participación plena y activa en los sacramentos y en la vida de la Iglesia. La Parroquia como medio ambiente de la catequesis
“La parroquia es, sin lugar a dudas, el lugar más importante en el que se forma y expresa la comunidad cristiana. Esto es llamado a ser una familia fraternal y acogedora donde los cristianosse dan cuenta de ser el pueblo de Dios. En la parroquia, todas las diferencias humanas se desvanecen y son absorbidas por la universalidad de la Iglesia. La parroquia es también el lugar habitual en el que nace la fe y en la que crece. Constituye, por lo tanto, un espacio comunitario muy adecuado para la realización del ministerio de la palabra a la vez como enseñanza, educación y experiencia de vida” (Directorio General para la catequesis, 257).
